Susan C. Petrey Clarion Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is a memorial to Susan, a friend of ours, and a member of the Portland Science Fiction Society. Since her death in 1980, we have raised money to annually send an aspiring writer to the Clarion Science Fiction Writer's Workshop. This was an event she had hoped to attend herself but was unable to do so because of financial reasons.

The original seed money was raised for flowers at Sue's funeral but we were unable to use the money for that purpose. Since then, money to fund the scholarship has been raised mainly by auctions at science fiction conventions. Auctions are held at every OryCon and Con; we have also held auctions at Westercons 37, 43, and 48 and at Minicon. We are always looking for donations of items to be auctioned, and money is never refused. Cash donations can be made through PayPal to the email address of susanpetrey@comcast.net. We also produced a book, Gifts of Blood, which contains all of Sue's stories. All proceeds from the sale of this book go to support the Fund. Copies are available from us at the address above.

The fund is administered by us, with the support of Portland fandom, and is legally a part of Oregon Science Fiction Conventions Inc., a tax-exempt organization.

The Petrey Fund Needs Help!

Each year, the Petrey Fund pays out more in scholarships and grants than our income from auctions and donations. This year we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the first scholarship awarded and are hoping to have some special events at OryCon. As one to celebrate, we have a goal of raising enough money this year to actually make additional contributions to the endowment fund. We need your help! If you would like to help us help writers here are few things you could do:

Send money. Nothing works like cash. We have a PayPal account with the email address of susanpetrey@comcast.net. Remember, we are part of OSFCI, a 501(c)3 non-profit and many employers will match donations.
Come up with a crazy fund raising idea and just do it. It could be anything from selling balloons at an event or organizing a dinner with a famous author and the guest would pay a premium to be sent to the fund. Use your imagination.
Are you the artsy-craftsy kind? Sell one of your creations on Ebay and donate the proceeds.
We need large and small items that can be used for our auction at OryCon and for a raffle-like event. Donations can be sent to the address above.

Scholarship Recipients and Fellows

Currently, two scholarships are being awarded annually, one to the Clarion Science Fiction Writers' Workshop in East Lansing, MI and one to Clarion West in Seattle. In addition, beginning in 2005, we are covering the entire amount of one Clarion West instructor's honorarium each year. This instructor will be designated the Susan C. Petrey Fellow.
